Sure, the fact that no matter which weapon you pick up, you’ll always have access to an unlimited supply of ammo is quite nice. Namely the fact that your weapons actually have to reload every now and then. There are some other things in Post Void that completely go against its “always move forward” nature. ![]() The fact that the game is so ridiculously fast, something that is almost always a plus in my books, only adds insult to injury in this case. It’s hard to feel motivated to play another round when you’re constantly reminded that you’re going to be attacked with these terrible lighting effects. The game rewards you with some seizure-inducing crap that violates your eyeballs as harshly as that one section from Dead Space 2. The problem is that, just like with the recently reviewed What Happened, Post Void loves to bombard you with stupidly strong flashing lights and strobing effects, especially whenever you die. Make no mistake, Post Void is a really stylish game, with some wacky imagery meant to resemble someone going high as the Burj Khalifa. This is a better anti-drugs campaign than having to watch Nancy Reagan say “just say no”. That’s not a bad thing, but there’s something else in the game that makes you question whether or not you should actually play another round after dying. This is the main reason a Post Void round can often last just a few seconds. You can only do so by killing enemies scattered throughout the level, who can also speed up your head’s leaking whenever they manage to shoot you. The head is constantly leaking, meaning that you will die if you don’t replenish it after just a few seconds. See the little head full of ooze featured in all of the screenshots? That’s actually your health meter. ![]() In Post Void, you don’t die with one hit, but that doesn’t mean it’s a breeze. Well, that’s to be expected in a game influenced by Devolver’s most famous IP, but Post Void does have some unique elements that make it stand out, although for all the wrong reasons. ![]() It’s a game meant to be replayed over and over again. There are only eleven levels in here, meaning that even the longest of runs will only last for a couple of minutes, tops. If you reach the end of a level you can choose a perk, like an extended health meter or a better gun. It’s a game in which a round can often last for a few dozen seconds, as you’ll die as quickly as you can run. Post Void takes the visual aesthetics and gameplay from old-school shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, and adds some roguelike elements straight from Hotline Miami. ![]()
